Best way to clean a dogs teeth yourself?

serena m asked:

I have a 6 year old pit bull with really bad breath. She’s the sweetest dog in the world with people, kids and cats. I’ve thought about taking her to the vet and having her teeth cleaned but they would sedate her to do it and it’s not really in the budget right now. She’s not aggressive at all but like most dogs she doesn’t like you sticking your hands in her mouth. Looking for natural at home remedies.
Thanks

If her teeth have tarter on them then you have to get them done by the vet. Otherwise you can purchase toothpaste from the pet store and use dental chews. Though the vet is the only one that can get rid of tarter.

Go on, get out an old toothbrush and some dog toothpaste, then hold on tight, it is better than nothing. Get a friend to help if need be. The vet will offer the same service at a price. With my dog I get stuck right in there and he usually gives up the fight and I can do a half decent job.

they have treats that you can buy at a pet store that freshen a dogs breath and even food that do it too so you might wanna look into buying that or do what my dad did but i wouldn’t recommend: hold onto your dog’s mouth/snout whatever you wanna call it and get a tooth brush and start brushing. yep my dad did that and my dog showed him his teeth but that only helped cleaning his teeth more and after a while he got used to it. Again DO NOT do this if your dog is really vicious and you have a week grip.

Do you feed your dog moist dog food? Dry dog food is better for dogs teeth. If you do feed your dog moist (canned) food, also give your dog Milk Bone dog biscuits or something similar. The dry biscuits clean a dogs teeth.

Just FYI, MOST dogs have bad breath. I have had a couple of my dogs live to age 15+ and I never brushed their teeth and they never had tarter build up. But they both ate dog biscuits regularly. Good luck.

Brush his teeth regularly, preferably every day. Be sure to use special toothpaste made for dogs; never use human toothpaste. It’s important to have your vet examine his teeth and gums at least once a year. This is the best way to catch problems before they become too serious.

For your dog, it sounds like the best thing you could do for your dog and yourself is to go to a local pet store and buy dental chews. They work wonders at freshening breath and cleaning teeth! You can buy a bag of about 20 for about 5$ to last you for a month. You can also buy chew toys that remove plaque from the dog’s teeth while they chew.I have also heard that letting your dog chew on certain spices (that are not poisonous to them!) can freshen a dogs breath. Not so sure about cleaning teeth though.

    Hope it helps!

    Create a video blog…instantly.

Start slow. Let your dog taste the toothpaste. Add a bit to your index finger and then massage around the outer part of your dog’s teeth. After your dog gets accustomed to this procedure, next introduce her to the toothbrush. If you make it part of your Pit Bull’s daily routine, she will learn to accept it. It’s really important to give your dog dental care at home. You can get step by step instructions on the link below.

Good for you for wanting to be responsible and brush your dogs teeth. However, I wouldn’t recommend using human toothpaste as it is too strong for dogs delicate mouths. Brushing your dogs teeth is as simple as using a toothbrush and making up a solution of lightly salted warm water, dipping the toothbrush into that and gently brushing away. Dogs don’t mind the taste of salty water and your dog will be quite happy to open its mouth for you to brush his teeth. It is never too late to start brushing your dogs teeth, every 2nd day would be great, but once a week is better than not at all. It will save your dog from having dental problems when he gets older and you the expense of having extra vet bills.
And by the way a nice meaty bone to chew on a couple of times a week will go a long way towards keeping those teeth clean also.
