What is the best way to whiten teeth with braces?

When I had braces a few years ago, I was told to just wait until I got them off to whiten my teeth. Otherwise, you will whiten the part that shows and the part covered up with the bands will be a different color.
I got a little obsessive about keeping my teeth and mouth healthy so I used a water pick and a small brush that goes between the teeth to clean them. And I also used the Sonicare toothbrush.
